How to choose

Poultry feeds are staged by age: the makers label starter feeds for chicks, grower or pullet feeds for young birds not yet laying, and layer feeds for hens in lay, with the age range and daily amount printed on the bag. A complete layer pellet, mash or crumble is designed to be the main diet of a laying hen; scratch and grain mixes are labelled as a supplementary feed rather than a complete ration, so check the bag before making a mix the whole diet. Feed manufacturers recommend changing feeds gradually over a week or so, and keeping feed dry and sealed against rodents and moisture.

What is the difference between starter, grower and layer feed?
